I watched The Chronicles Of Narnia – The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe for the first time last week.
… it inspired me to write about how Jesus was both the Lion and the Lamb.
Narnia portrayed Jesus as the Lion. Strong and bold. Jesus gave it all for us. We needed that. We still do.
… we need the Lamb too. Soft and Gentle. Caring. Forgiving.
I want to grow to be like Jesus.
We often think of the Lion as masculine and the Lamb as feminine…
this seems natural… just consider the characteristics listed above…
the tendency has been to gravitate the church toward the Lamb…
the tendency has been to gravitate the church toward a warm, fuzzy and lovely place…
I personally love this place…
however, that tends to drive a lot of guys away from the church…
they seem to struggle with their masculinity in this setting…
if you read through the Gospel, the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you’ll find Jesus was actually portrayed more as a Lion than a Lamb…
I love that dude.
I don’t really have to be androgynous to be the lion and the lamb…
or maybe that’s just the point, that being the Lion and the Lamb is OK…
Androgynous… having an ambiguous sexual identity…
just OK?
Maybe that’s what we’re striving for…
After all, He is both the Lion…
and the Lamb…
and growing to be more like Jesus is why we’re all here anyway…
Right On Dude?
Alas, I’m not a dude, but I still loved your post. I’d never thought of the Lamb as female. Mutton and all that…
You only just saw Narnia? I do hope you watched it on blu-ray! Now perhaps you’ll need to revisit that book you reviewed on C.S. Lewis’ sense of humor…
You’re right Carol, that’s sort of what got me thinking about watching the movie… that CS book… he was a very unique and interesting person!
Great movie. Glad you finally got to view it.
I think we tend to skew to one side or the other when we think of Jesus. He’s either all Lion or all Lamb. Rather than having balance we go to extremes….
Love the thought of how He can be both!! Happy Birthday to you Joe!!
What a great reminder that God is both a Lion and Lamb. It’s amazing how God knows which one we need in our situation.
I’ve always interpreted the Lion and the Lamb as not necessarily representative of gender or even gender tendencies, but more of the conqueror/leader as the Lion and the sacrifice as the Lamb. I’m so glad he’s both!
Good point Loren, I like that analogy!
