We make literally thousands of decisions a day never fully comprehending how those choices affect future events. Sometimes we feel we are just going through the motions of everyday life; going to school or work.  In one moment, our paths cross with another person and we are changed.  We like to believe that we are the masters of our own destiny, when in fact we are on a course overseen by a loving God.

Do you seek to learn which way the Lord is leading you?

Do you seek to learn which way the Lord is leading you?

The Lord designed us for a special mission yet, there are times when we have made a wrong decision.  The path we are on is way out of sequence with our purpose. At the right time something fantastic will occur and change our direction. These special encounters are known as divine appointments or divine interventions. Those seemly random events that appear to mean nothing but in hindsight, they expose a purpose and relevance to a current situation.

The Bibles describes many of these course corrections, which effected people and the course of nations. Some changes were for the good and other events, were not so good. One good story is found in book of Ruth.

A family from Bethlehem left their home because of a famine and moved to Moab. During their stay, the husband died and the two sons married Moabite women, which was forbidden by their Law. When the sons died, it left three widows. The Lord has a special heart for taking care of widows as the story unfolds.

Naomi, the mother was deeply distressed, she had lost everything, there was no way that she could provide for her widowed daughters or herself. She learned that the famine had passed in Bethlehem, so she decided to go home. On the way, Naomi realized the problems she would face with her Moabite daughters. So she decided to send them back to their families, but Ruth refused to leave Naomi.

“Ruth replied, ‘Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. I will go wherever you go and live wherever you live. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God. I will die where you die and will be buried there. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” (Ruth 1:16-17 NLT).

Ruth had made a noble choice to honor Naomi by fully submitting her life to serve Naomi and the God of Israel. The Lord was pleased with Ruth’s desire to stay with Naomi, which kept her on the right path. Naomi was once well off, but returned penniless and sent Ruth to find food for them. She carefully instructed Ruth on the customs of the land.

What were the odds Ruth would begin working in a field owned by relative? Could this be considered chance that she caught the eye and the heart of the one who would be her kinsman redeemer? No, the Lord honors those who honor him. Because Ruth chose to honor and love Naomi, who could offer her nothing, she was given a special place in lineage of Jesus.

Ruth married Boaz, the owner of the field and an eligible relative. Their son was Obed. Obed became the father of Jesse who in turn was the father of David. Even though she was considered an outsider to the Jewish faith, God can graft in anyone he chooses.

How about you, do you think there is a master plan for your life? Do you think that things just happen?  Do you step out in faith, like Ruth not sure of the end result?

The only way we will find purpose and meaning is to trust the Lord to guide us to our destiny.

“For I know the plans I have for you” says the Lord, “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT).

How To Avoid The Paradox To Wisdom, Age And Spiritual Maturity

Like the green fish… just happy to be me!

As we age, most of us tend to realize that we really don’t have it all figured out… that there is so much that we really don’t know…

at the same time, we generally also associate wisdom with age…

is this a paradox?

I’m not so sure… I believe this realization that we come to,  the more I learn the less I know…, is actually part of being wise. While I know I have much more to learn, I can now look back and reflect on…

Continually Seeking Wisdom…

Sometimes wisdom is as easy as simple math... usually not :-)

Continually Seeking Wisdom…

“My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding,
and if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom,
and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds victory in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.

Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair – every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.”

Proverbs 2: 1-11

It’s said that a wise person is sincere and direct with others… do you find it easy to express yourself in this way?

The Best Advice For Finding True Wisdom: Reverence For God

wisdom... all of the answers are out there...

Wisdom … knowledge… insight…

wisdom is something that will give me understanding, a sense of direction, or guide me to taking a specific (and positive :) ) action.

I’ve prayed many times for God to lead me in making decisions, asking Him to give me knowledge… basically, for wisdom. He will always answer prayers, although sometimes not exactly in the way and time that we desire. On one occasion I prayed long and hard to God for answers… and He delivered in a powerful way… here’s some of what He gave me:

“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding,
and if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.” Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV)

This verse is loaded with knowledge and understanding… it all goes together… you may selectively take and use just part of it… however, the verse is tied together with LOTS of “ands” so I would encourage you to think of it completely, and in its full meaning.

I prayed for wisdom and He delivered… He gave me more… much much more… it started with this powerful verse, Proverbs Chapter 2.

I trusted in Him, and gave Him Reverence (my love and respect)… and He delivered… in His perfect time and way.

I don’t know where you are with your spiritual journey but I do know this portion of Proverbs Chapter 2 can be applied to just about any situation… with faith… trusting and honoring God.

Why Stepping Out In Faith Is Like Herding Cats

these cats are cooperating... for now

Francis Chan is someone who inspires me. I wrote about two of Chan’s books in the post “Hey Look, It’s CHAN.” His accomplishments included founding Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California and the Eternity Bible College. He also sits on the board of directors of Children’s Hunger Fund and World Impact. Chan’s writing remains very popular, and he is an active public speaker. He has a new book coming out next week. I personally find Chan’s inspiring as he relates his take on God and draws in lukewarm Christians with a flair.

Chan goes on to lead by example in what must have been the craziest challenge that God could give him…

he felt called by God to take a leap of faith…

without further direction from God at the time he was led to stepped down from his leadership at Cornerstone last year.

I’m using Chan as my example but have seen more and more people who are taking a leap in faith…

While I have no clue whether Chan has a cat…

or even likes cats…

Stepping out in faith is just like herding cats because when we step out in faith we…

  • place every shred of our existence in the hands of our Maker in the ultimate act of faith (If you have ever tried to herd cats you know that they seldom cooperate… this must be exactly how God must feel at times with us too whenever we resist following Him)
  • feel completely naked (yes, cats run around naked all day long!)
  • are leaving our comfort zone for uncharted territory (if you are a cat herder you already know to expect the unexpected)
  • may be asked to do something that is unpredictable and at times may even seem “out of character” (most cats have a personality… one that is all their own… completely predictable… until you start herding them!)
  • are asked to do something that takes guts (cat guts have many uses… if you didn’t know it tennis rackets were strung with cat gut before synthetic became the norm)

Herding Cats Steeping Out In Faith can personally be one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever encounter.

I’m not suggesting that everyone go out and leave their church or quit their job our whatever… unless that’s what God is leading you to do!

If you’re not sure where God may be leading you I would suggest praying about it… and looking for the answers in the Bible… He will lead the way!

Is God calling you to step out in faith?
