Our 1979-1980 High School Cross-Country Team persevered through many trials to finish with the best season of our era. It brings back memories of 70-mile weeks for endurance and brutal sessions of 16 70-second quarters for, as Coach Clark Ale describes it, “to build character.”

We won our District, finished second in Regionals and fourth in the State. While we had several outstanding individuals, everyone involved seems to agree we were a cohesive team that was dedicated to our sport and to each other. Our friendships endure to this day, very much facilitated by Facebook. We’re a tight group, with lots of great memories of our times together growing up. Both on and off the track.

Donald Broxton, Pat Topp, David Roth, Fred Gipson, Connie Sanders, and Mona Shaffer were the Class of 1980 Seniors that led the group. Dedicated athletes who knew how to have fun.

And, of course, our beloved Coach. The sage of a wise man now swing dancer who instilled a burning desire within us to succeed. Yes, we’re a cast of characters, and yes, you had something to do with making us that way. ☺ I remember that look in his eye like it was yesterday – YOU CAN DO THIS NOW GO HAVE AT IT – and we did!!!

It’s reunion time for the Vero Beach High School Class of 1980. The Class of 1980 has graciously invited those of us that were in the neighboring classes of ’79 and ’81. They’re a Class Act. Many thanks!!
