It Could Happen… (Why I Like Medium)

“We now live in a world of infinite information. Most of our systems weren’t designed for this world. Even if you had the best recommendation system ever, and everyone stopped publishing interesting stuff tomorrow, you’d never get through all the content you’re interested in. You need a place to start. So our goal is to help people pay attention to the most valuable stuff first and to have the best ideas win.” Ev Williams,  founder of Medium.

Like I said about 6 months ago, a whole bunch of people just spent a whole bunch of time writing a whole bunch of material on the internet. How do we sift through the ashes to find the best of the best? I believe they just may have a model with the A to the Q.

These guys brought us Blogger. And Twitter. Hello, did you register that one? Like these dudes have been on the cusp before, maybe just maybe they’re on to some new goodness here too?

So here’s their angle:

  • Great ideas compete on their own merit at Medium. They rank short stories and manifestos based on interest and engagement.
  • They claim the best in-browser editor on the web. There is no layer of abstraction. “Smooth as butter and like no other” – Hmmm… it is incredibly clean. What writing should be :-)
  • Writing here is a collaborative effort. That can be in the form of writing on a shared idea, or by inviting collaborators to help polish up a piece before publishing it. I like both of these possibilities.

OK, I got an invite and I hung out a shingle. “Just Out There” is my namesake. I have some material on the back burner for this place… we’ll see where it goes.

Please stop by and check it out, pretty cool!

The Commonplace Platform… how 140 has changed our culture

Words... choose them wisely for a positive impression!

To thrive in our world today I have to make my point.

Quickly.

One word sentences are now allowed. Paragraphs are choppy blocks. We used to think of our kids as juvenile for their text language. Now we all use it. And how sweet it really is.

I can even express a thought with just one letter… k?

The impact on our attention span: Exuberant!

Twitter: How Far To Reach For Influence?

Twitter: How Far To Reach?

I’m on “learn as you go” mode with Twitter. It’s been a while since I’ve written about Twitter, and since I’ve made some changes on how I manage my Twitter account I thought I would write about it again.

first a random thought…

- it seems like there has been an influx of new people on Twitter over the past few months, I’ve noticed it locally here in Jacksonville… more and more people are using Twitter to self-promote, network and engage with their audience. Very Cool !!

and today’s thought on Twitter: How Far To Reach For Influence? …

- I occasionally have some pretty strange follows… and I’m not totally settled on how to handle some of these. Obviously the ones that are just trash I block, or remove. However, part of my objective of my writing is to have influence with outsiders (i.e., people who are currently in The Great Beyond, and outside my 4 Circles)…

so I was Thinkin’… How Far To Reach For Influence?

Whenever I think of this question I go back to a statement our Pastor made at church not long ago… I forget his exact words but someone mentioned to him something to the effect that we have non-believers attending our church… a statement made in a negative way… and how incredibly awesome that really is!

Sometimes it seems we are so hung up with making just the right impression we loose focus of the big picture. There are certainly a variety of uses for social media, a large part of my objective is to share the Gospel. My Twitter is set up as a public account, and not really like a private club, so if I truly want to reach The Great Beyond and share the Gospel, should I block folks who follow me when they may not be just like me? Since I’m not following them back, why should it matter who is following me? I would really like to have influence with all kinds of people.

How do you feel about Twitter, like it or is it for the birds?

Do you believe it matters who is following your Twitter account?

Why don’t you feed Twitters to your Facebook account?

I’m thinkin’ the recommended dose of Twitters/day (between 5 and 12, depending on the source) is Too Much Information for Facebook… if I actually twittered that much, as many days I struggle to, would my Facebook friends find it annoying? Quite possibly. Plus, I want to connect in a different way through Facebook and Twitter (i.e., they’re not actually one in the same to me).

Last year I wrote about Twitter, how I was going to use it to help me repost some of my archive material from I’m Just Thinkin’ to the blog’s audience. Since that time I’ve also been experimenting with and learning about Twitter and how to use it to help me expand my network as well as the audience.

Some random thoughts on Twitterin’…

  • As someone who can be a tad bit verbose at times, Twitter forces me to be concise as I have to pack my thoughts into 140 characters (I hear this can actually improve my writing). It also helps me build and focus in on my brand.
  • While I can’t possibly read the plethora of Twitter feeds from everyone that I follow… if I want to catch up a little with someone who has an account I can do so by pulling it up (or by jingling their digits – if we’re tight!).
  • It’s fun! I recently Twittered brief interviews with each of my daughters… they got a real kick out of that :)

If you’re a Twitter-er I hope you’ll look me up there so we can connect.

What are your thoughts on Twittering? Why do you, or do you not Twitter?

Why Flock with 600-Million Gregarious Peeps?

There’s more good than bad to be had on Facebook but like so much of the world we live in today it is what we make of it.

I started flocking on facebook to find old friends. That was fun, to see what they’re up to and share memories from the past. Then I added relatives. It’s much easier to remain closer to everyone within my 4 circles than I would be able to without FB. Next I thought I would world wide witness on there, and that has been very fruitful and enjoyable. Since many of my business contacts are also personal friends I added these people to my network and that has brought us even closer. Finally, I started getting serious about writing and found another use: publicizing my writing and growing my network to include folks that I would otherwise probably not connect with.

Next I found I needed this thing called Twitter, you know, that place where the narcissists are followed by the voyeurs (just kidding, that’s not what it’s all about!). Michael Hyatt, who’s blog I follow regularly, pointed out that we shouldn’t repost from our blogs, while some of our best material lies buried in our posts of the past. So my Twitter account is a convenient way to repost, plus it shows up on my Facebook page. Then I got the clue about Twitter, that people actually use it to spread the news about what they’re up to, that I can be branded and use both Facebook and Twitter to build a community. So now I tweet random thoughts about my passions and  writing, which can be quite a few since I am ALWAYS thinkin’. This is all fairly outgoing for a fellow who was so shy as a little boy his mom called him “the mouse!”

Why do you (or do you not) flock?
