Jump Start Your Happy Monday with God RAP / THE4POINTS Video

If you’re not a morning person you may want to wait till a little later to check this out… it’s been stuck in my noggin’ since last week when a friend shared it with me:

thebandwithnoname‘s lead singer, Chip Kendall, was born and raised in Vero Beach (!!!), living there till his family moved to Jerusalem. Chip now lives in Stockport, England.

Hoping you’re moved to a super Happy Monday!!

What new music are you listening to?

Jay-Z and the Holy Road

I read a Rolling Stone article recently… How Jay-Z Became King of America. Yep, this rapper rules in hip-hop/pop culture. Ten Grammy Awards and he has more number one records than Elvis. And his influence extends well beyond his music. His estimated net worth of $150 million includes co-ownership in the 40/40 Club, part owner of the New Jersey Nets, and the creator of the Rocawear clothing line.

Along about the same time my mom sends me a newspaper article about Bonnaroo, and Jay-Z was apparently the headliner there this year. FYI, I ventured to Bonnaroo about 5 years ago. Quite an experience. Been there, done that!

So here I am writing about Jay-Z and wishing I had a cool rapper name too… what would it be? And then my mind wandered to Jay-Z’s religious beliefs…

I found this quote, from a January 14 interview with Angie Martinez:

“For the record, I of course believe in God, but I believe in one God.  If people must know my religious beliefs, I believe in one God. I don’t believe in religion. I don’t believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I think it’s one God. I think it’s all the same God, and I don’t believe in Hell. But as far as God, of course I believe in God. Am I part of some sect or cult? That sounds stupid to me. It’s like ignorant to even say, and umm… I guess that’ll be the last time I address that. It’s ignorant to me.”

Sweet, he’s part way there!!

So I started thinkin’… maybe I’ll pray, write about him and maybe I can draw him closer to God for a win! I’m certain that my writing here has had an effect on Lady Gaga, right?

I’m praying and pullin’ for them both.

How sweet would it be!!

Lady Gaga: The Modern Madonna or just Bad Romance

I’m sort of on a different plane… tangent… or parallel… than main-stream pop culture. I don’t really watch a lot of TV, and not into “the scene”… I’m a little quirky or weird – aren’t we all, in our own way!

Not that I think that all of pop culture is bad… like all of us I have some pop culture weaknesses… I indulge in a double-tall-no whip-non fat-mocha, and the local low-fat frozen yogurt establishments most every day, but there are just parts of pop culture that I’m not really that… shall we say… GAGA over…

However, since Lady Gaga is hot (referring to her popularity here) and IT at the moment, why not write about it here (music IS one of my categories, you know)

I like some of her groove, it’s catchy but would wear on me if I did tune into the local radio noise and heard it a zillion times a day. She can bust a move on the dance floor like few others.

Ok, here’s what I’m thinkin’… is some of this stuff poison for our minds? Yep, especially for men! Men have a well-documented weakness for visual media, think pornography here. That’s what A LOT of pop culture, especially TV and the Internet, is all about. Check out what Jonathan Acuff says on his Serious Wednesday’s about it.

Was Madonna “bad news”… of course not, I grew up with it, remember… a lot of this just depends on your perspective.

Oh yea, the end of the “bad romance” video… that poor dude… toasted to a crisp on the bed… Ouch!!

So what do you think… is Lady Gaga the Modern Day Madonna, or just Bad Romance?

Let the Music Play

I love music, all kinds! Well, allright, really twangy country and some of the rap “music” is a little much for my liking. Otherwise, if it’s clean, I’m game. I even admit I enjoy most of the traditional Christian music.

Two of my favorites at the moment are Steve Fee and Jonny Diaz. I just discovered Diaz recently so it’s new and exciting. I first heard Fee at Buckhead Church a few years ago. Both Fee and Diaz are uplifting and motivating to me.

I really enjoy listening to live music. Something about being able to hear the drumbeat rattle through your body, and especially the sound of horns, brass, and of course, RHYTHM. I’ve even ventured to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and to Bonnaroo. Both were very interesting experiences, hearing Galactic at Bonnaroo as a lighting storm approached was the best live performance that I’ve ever experienced. ALIVE and The Austin City Limits Music Festival are on my to-do list. Local to Jacksonville… you KNOW that Charlie Walker is the man!!! Check him out, he’s all over the place.

This is just a taste of the music that I really love, there are sosososo many, and the list keeps growing!

Please let us know what you are listening too, I’d love to check out something new!!

A Few of My Favorite Things…

I’m running the Gate River Run tomorrow, a 15k race, and trying to decide what I can’t live without during this race… here’s my list:

  • some jammin’ tunes: I’ve loaded up my tiny iPod Shuffle with 90 minutes of the stuff I love to listen to really loud (YES YES YES, I SAY, I have hearing issues!!)
  • Carbs!! I’m getting my body ready… Loading my skinny-ness tonight with a good dose of carbs (in addition to loving to cook I also enjoy indulging in what I make).
  • Gu: this is new to me… I stopped at the Jacksonville Running Company store the other day after FOOD across the street at the Thai place, and stocked up on Gu for the race. I have no clue what Gu tastes like yet but am thinkin’ it will be macho to guzzle Gu while rippin’ up the road in my NEW New Balance ROCKETS!!
  • Hydration: I’m peeing A LOT… because I’m drinking a lot of water to hydrate. FYI – peeing is not one of my favorite things but I thought I should mention it here (I’ll spare you the visual media :) )
  • A lucky rubberband, OF COURSE!! These don’t weigh a lot, are flexible, and if I get in a jam I’m thinkin’ I can do something MacGyver-ish with it (plus I just LOVE rubberbands)…
  • Enough clothes to keep me from being arrested, and to pin my necessary number on me.
  • I can do all things through Him who gives me strength… yep, I’m taking Him with me too…

Ok, so, what are your favorite things?
