Burning Daylight

This is a John Wayne-ism… “… let’s go, we’re Burning Daylight!”

He coined the phrase in one of his old western movies, The Cowboys, released in 1972.

We had a professor in the Geology Department that grabbed hold of it. It also fit him to a T.

This saying is offered as encouragement to keep moving forward and doing good through each day… “For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100:5

Lots of people worldwide gave thought and prayer yesterday to the events of 9/11. Where were you on that day? Everyone remembers. For me, another story began on 9/11… a new employee named Mark Enge started work in my office. Mark was brought in hand by a friend to me as he needed work… a self-employed window washer who found himself in a jam… just diagnosed with cancer, a lump on his lung that the doctors could not remove, he was not physically able to safely climb a ladder any more.

Burning Daylight… Mark knew it well… he made the most of every single day. Every Thursday he would stop by the office on his way to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, a short two-block walk from the office. His weekly dose of Chemo followed. He did not look forward to it. The chemo would knock him down for a couple of days. We would see him again on Monday, smiling and ready to go. Monday’s were a happy day for Mark.

The interesting part of Mark’s story was that when he arrived I thought of him as one of my people projects… someone who was brought along that I would help out… we literally made up stuff for him to do… running errands, etc… we taught him to do field work… but we really did the hard work, he just came along and handed us the hand auger. But here’s the kicker… Mark wasn’t one of my people projects… I was one of His people projects! Mark showed up for a reason no doubt… but, for me, Mark was there to do God’s work in my life. The other people working in my office at the time will tell you the same thing. Mark had a lasting impression on each and every one of us… we saw him live by faith every day… until the very end… ”Burning Daylight” was not an option in Mark’s world… he knew Jesus and gave us hope and strengthened our faith.

God has a perfect plan for each and every one of us…

I want to know Jesus…

I want to stick with the plan… His perfect plan.

Where were you on 9/11?

Effectively Communicating A Message To A Broad Audience

Did you ever attend church and leave thinking “gee, it seemed like the pastor was communicating directly to me today. His message really spoke to my heart!” I know I have! That is a huge compliment to a pastor, who has a difficult job of coming up with a message once a week that is relevant to a diverse and broad audience. But he didn’t really write it just for you or me. He’s effectively communicating.

“Effective communication is the art of successfully delivering your message” – Stefan Swanepoel.

I spent nearly 20 years working full-time in a field where being able to effectively convey my thoughts in writing was critical. Our proposals and reports were written and submitted to a variety of interested parties, some experts and others laymen in the field. While the documents were often written to express our methods, conclusions, opinions and recommendations to a broad audience, they typically were written in a way that just about anyone could understand, and often with little or no direct dialogue. Submittals to regulatory agencies inevitably created a Request for Additional Information, or RAI, or even the occasional phone conversation with the regulator reviewing the report, to answer questions that came up.

Writing here on the internet to a broad audience is completely different…

it’s even a different style than the material that I’m working on for my books.

I admit I’m not very good at effectively communicating my ideas sometimes. Some of my material is about as clear as mud. In the consulting business, we typically overcame this by having peer reviews of reports and proposals before they went out the front door. I’m winging it here at I’m Just Thinkin’. On top of that, blogging is a different style and venue, than the technical reports that we generated in environmental and engineering consulting.

There are a whole lot of people writing blogs these days, and many have different goals. You can read more about mine at my About page.

How do I try to appeal to a broad audience?

Well, for starters I try to leave my thoughts open, initially developing the concept, then leading up to the point were your imagination could find a connection to your individual situation or circumstances… I’ve read in a variety of places that’s the way it’s done here in the blogosphere. Am I being successful at this? That’s for all of you, my audience, to decide. I do receive compliments from people who tell me that I am accomplishing this goal. I also have friends that tell me they have a completely different impression of specific material than what I’ve intended. I will keep working on this.

I also know that my topics and style will not appeal to everyone. That’s ok, because not everyone would pick up a Charles Dickens book either (just sayin’).

Next time you communicate…

think first…

what is my intended goal?

and how do I reach my audience?

is my message going to be helpful?

and, most importantly, will it honor God?

What other thoughts do you have on effective communication?

Bert’s Season Of Change

“Winds from the east… Mist comin’ in… Like something’s a brewin’, about to begin… Can’t put me finger on what lies in store… But I feel what’s to ‘appen, all ‘appened before…!”

Those were Bert’s infamous words when his friend Mary Poppins blew in to London and landed in front of No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane… riding the breeze from the east with her umbrella.

Mary landed in response to the Banks’ needs for help with rearing their children for “a season.”

The keenly observant Bert knew the shifting winds would bring a season of change.

Bert was a whimsical one… he had an optimistic outlook, to say the least. A working-class sort eventually turned chimney sweep by day, he readily kicked up his heels and moved to the beat of a different drum. He seemed to be pretty much game for and making the most of whatever God would throw his way. I like that attitude!

“Seasons” in life are referred to as blocks of time as we move from one setting or experience to the next.

Seasons come and go… we can also think of “a season” in terms of the quarterly calendar… and there is some goodness as we look forward to each new season of the year.

Fall is just around the corner and everyone is fired up for something…

gettin’ fired up for ________ (you fill in the blank)

maybe for you it’s football season, new Snooki and Jersey Shore, cooler weather and the change of seasons…

or even the change that Bert felt in the breeze from the east…

energy and excitement fill the air!

You may be in the middle of a season… just coming out of one… or maybe just looking forward to tomorrow and fall for some other really good reason…

whatever the circumstances, 2 Timothy 4:2 says we should “be prepared in season and out of season”

Prepared for ??

“… whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Fill your world with God’s love so that all that you do will give Him glory!

What does the this “season” bring to mind for you?

Hoping you have the Happiest Monday!!

How my daily run prepares me for my daily walk through life

this athlete is likely already thinking about the next hurdle/opportunity

What do you see out in front of you? When I’m out for my Run Forrest Run I am looking out ahead at a variety of things. I can relate the view on my daily run to my walk through life in the following ways:

The Immediate: These are the obstacles that are within close proximity that I need to pay special attention to… like the curb that I need to take heed to step up to. These are life’s small hurdles that come up every day in our walk. One way I keep moving effortlessly past these small obstacles with minimal frustration is by keeping some margin in my day. I do my best to move past The Immediate hurdles in a hot second… and with minimal effort.

Time To Adjust: Far enough in the distance that I can put some thought into my approach… I’m spot on if I’m coming up to an intersection and can adjust my speed to the cycling of the traffic light so that I can shoot through the intersection without coming to a complete stop. This makes me think of how I should keep the pep in my step by applying the wisdom that I’ve learned from past experiences… and from continually marinating in His Word.

Way On Out There: The stuff that may be out of sight right now… but it will be important before I make it back home. In my run, it may be a bridge that I have to cross… or seeing the beach at the turn-around point in my 6.5-mile out-and-back route. It’s the part of life that I know I should plan ahead for that I can’t necessarily see on a daily basis. A lot of people think retirement here… I’m also thinking legacy, or where I’ll have an impact… and, most importantly, am I being intentional about growing in my relationship with Jesus?

Being in a growing relationship with Jesus brings together our perspective of the Immediate, Time To Adjust and the Way On Out There in perfect harmony.

It’s through this growing relationship that we can truly enjoy…

Just The Scenery: Running outside is one of my simple pleasures… I live to be outdoors. Nature and our surroundings are there for our enjoyment and if I’m not soaking up this stuff I feel like I’m missing out on life. Just The Scenery reminds me to keep living in  One Big Box . The Big Box helps to keep me vibrant, loving and in line with Jesus’ way.

What are your simple pleasures in life? Do you have a strategy for your daily walk?

Go Commando: Where It All Began

if we're talking trench coats Burberry is it for me (but not for going commando!)

Do you know who the original Go Commandos were? This one is a slam dunk, no brainer…

Adam & Eve, of course!

We can add them to the list… in addition to Jesus and The 12 that I’ve written about previously, Adam & Eve also knew how to Go Commando.

Going back to the beginning…

so they initially ran around naked as a jay bird. They were not embarrassed. It was all good…

then, everything changed…

the fall of mankind…

and they donned a tunic (outercoat) that the Lord made for them…

the King James Version… “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Genesis 3:21.

And since fruit of the loom was NOT mentioned…

A&E were the original Go Commando’s!!

While I’m saddened about the fall of man, it may be a good thing we’re all wearing clothes now. I know, this is a skin-deep point of view that I need to work on… but there are some benefits to clothes that I can also consider:

  • Clothes can be a form of personal expression, or style.
  • Seeing a bunch of other people naked is one less issue for me to face in  the grocery store
  • The car seat can get scorching hot in the summertime.

The community-building question: Are there any other benefits of wearing clothes that you can come up with?

In the mean time, I’ll keep scouring my Bible for the next Go Commando…

A Luminary For Life

My daughter Allie had a baby just over a week ago.

Sweet little Emma is a tremendous blessing to our family and a luminary for life.

The very first thing Emma learned was to breathe deeply.

Next up was a new way of eating.

There will be many more baby steps to her journey.

I am inspired by children in a special way. I absolutely adore little ones. I’ve written about kids plenty here at I’m Just Thinkin’.

Today Little Emma has me thinking about how we learn and grow every day…

she’s a beacon or luminary for life…

she’s already learned and grown so much in just one short week…

it makes life seem so brief in comparison to eternity.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5: 14-16

Nolan, Emma and Jesus are a light to me… they inspire me.

That’s something to get really, awesomesauce excited about!!

It puts a smile on my face and a pep in my step!!!

It’s the excitement of new life beaming with God’s glory every moment of the day.

What’s happening in your world today that inspires you in a positive way?

Simplify Life With 6 Fun Mathematical Expressions

quantum mechanics ... Ugh!!!

Sometimes life seems to get stressful and we need to simplify. Too much to do and not enough time to get it all done. I am feeling this way right now as I have been overwhelmed with commitments. The ole To-Do / Priority list helps… but whenever it gets busy life can tend to sway out of balance and the really important stuff can get pushed aside. When this happens I need to try to remember to simplify: Strive to do less by focusing on what matters most.

In school we were taught to write mathematical expressions in their simplest form. Remember simplify? I really enjoyed math in school, and always like to help my daughters with their math homework. They say that I missed my calling, that I should have been a math teacher.

Here are 6 fun mathematical expressions on how to simplify when you’re overloaded:

    • Regroup – Yep, Regroup comes first. It can help you identify the most essential tasks. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of resisting the temptation to blow off that which is of eternal significance… if you happen to be busy and stressed you may need God more now than ever!
    • Add – Add a layer of organization to your world. This may be necessary to efficiently complete the tasks at hand once they are identified. Joshua Leatherman provided an excellent writeup as a guest on Michael Hyatt’s blog about the Pomodoro Technique , a tool to use for becoming more efficient. Adding a to-do item like this one may make the rest of your today and tomorrow flow better.
    • Subtract – Reduce or try to eliminate unnecessary distractions. “… and that’s all I’ve got to say about that” – oh how I love my Gump-isms!
    • Multiply – When I think of multiply, multi-task comes to mind… how to take the use of my time to a new level… if you’re good at tapping your head and rubbing your belly at the same time now is the occasion to make good use of the gifts He has given you :)
    • Divide – Divy up tasks among people who are in your support group (i.e., don’t hesitate to ask your spouse, family, small group or other supportive friends for assistance in your time of need… and be sure to help them when they need it too!).
    • Regroup – you are absolutely correct… Regroup was first… and it’s last too. Don’t forget to Regroup… again! Make every effort to keep God at the center of your every endeavor.

I want my life to have impact in a positive way. To do that I need to…

keep it simple with Him in the middle…

pray about everything…

be thankful, and let the joy and peace of Jesus rule in my heart.

Can you think of any more mathematical expressions to help simplify life?
